Program Benefits

The secondary MAT program features:

  • Affordable. All students pay the same tuition regardless of residency. More than 70% of MAT students receive scholarships, such as K-State's online scholarships and/or the Kansas Board of Regents' Kansas Teacher Service Scholarship.
  • Earn While You Learn. Through our Practitioner Track, Kansas students may become full-time teachers and obtain a restricted license while completing their degree requirements. Our License-Seeking Track allows you to be a full-time student or continue your current employment.
  • Flexible and Convenient. MAT students work on their online courses as their schedules allow and may complete their program in as little as 12 months or at their own pace, with student teaching in local schools.
  • Personalized Coaching. Every MAT student is assigned a GradCat — a master teacher who serves as a mentor, coach, and evaluator from the beginning to the end of each course.
  • Quality. K-State’s MAT program is ranked in the top 20 among 323 online education programs evaluated by U.S. News & World Report. The program combines research-based preparation with practical, classroom-based experiences, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared.
  • Exceptional Learning Community. Your peers in the MAT program come from across the country and around the globe, bringing talent, insight, and shared purpose into every conversation.
  • One Size Does Not Fit All. The MAT recognizes and values your unique strengths, views teaching as a practical and individualized activity, and prepares you for success across a variety of contexts.
  • In-Demand Everywhere. K-State MAT graduates have the flexibility to launch teaching careers in their own communities — or beyond, with licensure that opens doors nationwide.

What Will I Learn in the Physics MAT?

You'll learn how to turn your science expertise into effective physics teaching—planning engaging lessons, explaining complex ideas, assessing student learning, and managing your classroom. You'll also learn alongside future STEM teachers while applying proven teaching practices specifically to physics.

Can I Complete the Physics MAT if I Live Outside Kansas?

Yes. You can complete K-State's Physics MAT from anywhere in the United States, provided you have access to an accredited, English-speaking school that agrees to partner with K-State for your field experiences. After completing the program, you can pursue teacher licensure in your home state, subject to that state's requirements.

Can I Continue Working While Earning My MAT?

Yes. K-State's Physics MAT offers two flexible pathways designed for career changes:

  • Practitioner track: Teach while earning your MAT. If you're hired as a full-time physics teacher in a Kansas school, K-State will work with you and your school district to support your application for a Kansas Restricted Teaching License.
  • License-seeking track: Keep your current career while earning your MAT. Complete your online coursework while continuing your current employment, then complete your required student teaching in an accredited school near you.

Once you complete the program, you'll be eligible to apply for a Kansas Initial Teaching License. The license may transfer to other states upon completion of any additional requirements for that state.

How would your students describe you as a teacher? Authentic, human and meaningful. It’s less about my teaching experience and more about the students’ experiences in my courses. I want my students to see their humanity at the center of what we’re doing. I want their voices to feel heard in what we’re doing. I want them to feel challenged in appropriate and meaningful ways.
