What Will I Learn in the Earth and Space Science MAT?
You'll learn how to turn your science expertise into effective earth and space science teaching—planning engaging lessons, explaining complex ideas, assessing student learning, and managing your classroom. You'll also learn alongside future STEM teachers while applying proven teaching practices specifically to earth and space science.
Can I Complete the Earth and Space Science MAT if I Live Outside Kansas?
Yes. You can complete K-State's Earth and Space Science MAT from anywhere in the United States, provided you have access to an accredited, English-speaking school that agrees to partner with K-State for your field experiences. After completing the program, you can pursue teacher licensure in your home state, subject to that state's requirements.
Can I Continue Working While Earning My MAT?
Yes. K-State's Earth and Space Science MAT offers two flexible pathways designed for career changes:
- Practitioner track: Teach while earning your MAT. If you're hired as a full-time earth and space science teacher in a Kansas school, K-State will work with you and your school district to support your application for a Kansas Restricted Teaching License.
- License-seeking track: Keep your current career while earning your MAT. Complete your online coursework while continuing your current employment, then complete your required student teaching in an accredited school near you.
Once you complete the program, you'll be eligible to apply for a Kansas Initial Teaching License. The license may transfer to other states upon completion of any additional requirements for that state.
