Kaitlin Schlotfeldt

elementary third grade teacher

Hometown: Mt. Vernon, Iowa

Undergraduate degree: Psychology

Why I chose teaching: I worked in a before and after school daycare/ preschool at our elementary throughout high school and college. Looking into next steps for my career I realized that I wasn't ready to leave the schools, and many of my coworkers and teachers in the building encouraged me to consider teaching instead. I was really happy working in the school, and after giving it a lot of thought, I realized teaching would make me a lot happier than my path at the time.

Why I selected K-State’s MAT program: The MAT program worked really well with my schedule and allowed me to complete my teaching degree and start my career in a really quick time frame.

Why I’m a unique teacher: Having a psychology degree as well helps me to bring in other skills into my classroom. My experiences in undergrad and MAT really prepared me well for teaching, I was even asked to be on the school leadership team as a 3rd year teacher with the district making an exception for the number of years of service needed to be on that team.

“The professors in the MAT program were great! The school did an awesome job working with school districts when Iowa school policy didn't fit the typical K-State practicum/student teaching schedule. I never had any issues and K-State took care of everything for me!”
