Position Description
This position works directly with teaching faculty, providing guidance on research-based best practices, teaching tools for the online environment and the latest technology for implementation in the online classroom. This position provides project leadership for faculty and colleagues and plays a critical role in providing expertise in the planning, development and delivery of high-quality learning experiences. The incumbent also works with peers to establish consistency in online courses across the university.
This position reports to the K-State Global Campus co-director for program development and management.
Instructional Design – 55%
- Analyze student-learning outcomes and provide expertise in the planning, development and delivery of high-quality learning experiences.
- Identify and utilize appropriate tools, techniques, best practices, reference materials and innovative approaches that support Kansas State University’s efforts to engage in all phases of curriculum development, assessment, and measurement of the achievement of competencies, learning objectives and training goals.
- Research, analyze and apply trends in learning technologies and instructional design as they apply to quality online learning experiences via individual efforts, campus wide collaboration and participation in departmental training and national conferences
- Evaluate online courses utilizing the K-State Rubric for Quality eLearning to ensure quality standards are met.
- Incorporate instructional design best practices into course design and development.
- Devise modes of assessment to directly measure learning objectives. Monitor instructional effectiveness of online instructional techniques.
- Implement and lead instructional design initiatives based on best practices and use of leading-edge technology.
- Utilize eLearning development tools and software in course development.
- Collaborate closely with K-State Information Technology Services and Academic and Student Technology in providing support to new and experienced faculty on effective use of K-State’s learning management system (Canvas), video capturing and storage system (Mediasite) and video conferencing system (Zoom) in supporting online educational programs.
- Work closely with K-State Student Access Center to ensure course materials comply with K-State regulations and policies. Serve as an advocate for online course accessibility.
- Create or adapt supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role-plays, games, etc.) using UDL principles.
- Collaborate with peer instructional designers across campus to develop standards and common templates.
Faculty Training, Consulting and Support – 40%
- Develop and lead training opportunities for faculty and staff.
- Analyze, design and develop materials for existing and new initiatives, to improve quality standards.
- Lead special projects that provide support for and build relationships with academic departments and instructional technology support units as recommended or requested.
- Partner with colleges and departments to provide training opportunities tailored to staff needs.
- Provide troubleshooting and guidance for faculty and staff regarding course design issues as they arise.
- Develop and maintain course content and lead the Online Course Design Institute (CDI) for faculty teaching online courses and faculty receiving Global Campus grant funding to develop new or redesign existing online courses.
- Manage and monitor faculty progress on the development of grant-funded online courses.
- Consult and problem-solve on an ad-hoc basis.
- Work closely with K-State Teaching and Learning Center to provide faculty training through collaboration in professional development efforts including Teaching Chats and marketing of the student evaluation process (TEVAL) for online courses.
- Provide and schedule consulting opportunities for faculty.
K-State Global Campus/University Responsibility – 5%
- Serve fully on unit, K-State Global Campus or university goal teams, committees, task forces, etc. as requested.
- Participate in campus programming related to distance education, retention or student services, diversity events, leadership programs and other campus programs that would expand knowledge
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree. This position may use an educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager.
- Three years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of principles and practice of instructional design in addition to pedagogy and andragogy
- Knowledge of inclusive pedagogies and design
- Project management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in instructional design, education or related field
- Experience performing the duties above in a post-secondary environment including online, classroom-based and blended courses
- Experience with typical instructional design software and systems including LMS (e.g. Blackboard Learn, Canvas) and related software (e.g., web conferencing), online development tools (e.g., Adobe CS) and other instructional tools (e.g., Camtasia, Articulate)
- Experience facilitating individual and group training
- Proven record of organizational and administrative skills including the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
- Experience working and communicating effectively with diverse groups
- Excellent judgment, including sensitivity to personal and confidential information
- Strong commitment to faculty and student success
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills using email, chat, videoconferencing and other technology
- Strong knowledge of implementing quality best practices in designing and setting up courses
- Understanding of technology as it relates to digital learning and online delivery
- Advanced computer skills including use of Microsoft Office Suite programs and electronic communication applications
- Aptitude to learn and implement new technologies quickly and effectively
- Working knowledge of Section 508 accessibility compliance and universal design principles
- Ability to effectively work with people at various levels of technical proficiency
- Ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse groups
- Ability to build and maintain constructive relationships with faculty, other campus partners, and learners
- Knowledge of the field of distance education including general status and challenges, trends, student services and faculty issues
- Knowledge of online teaching pedagogy and andragogy
- Ability to manage time and work independently or as a team member
- Ability to quickly obtain highly functional skills in new software and LMS systems
- Knowledge and experience with HTML
- Well versed in application of design methodologies such as ADDIE, backward design, and competency-based education
- Willingness to take responsibility for projects and follow through to completion with minimal supervision
- Professional demeanor paired with a solution-focused mindset, positive attitude, attention to detail and customer service focus
- High initiative and seeks opportunities for professional development to improve instructional design knowledge and skills and stay abreast of industry trends and standards; shares that knowledge internally to continually grow the knowledge base of the larger design team

Work Location: This is a remote position with Global Campus. Employees are expected to maintain a home office or other approved location (in accordance with university policy) from which they would work. Global Campus operates on Central time.
Appointment conditions: Unclassified, regular, exempt 12-month appointment
Inclement weather designation: Non-essential
Salary range: 10A $51,500-82,358/year
